The White Russian is a classic cocktail with a few twists, and it's anything but "skinny." After all, the combination of vodka, coffee liqueur and cream really packs a gut punch. Although the White Russian isn't a typical coffee recipe, it does contain liqueur with a coffee taste. And included in this White Russian recipe post you'll find instructions on how to make your own coffee liqueur.

These days, most folks associate the White Russian with Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski. And whether or not you’re a fan of the Dude, this indulgent drink wouldn’t be nearly as popular without him. So, let’s take a closer look at this infamous cocktail.

The Cult Drink From The Big Lebowski: A Genuine White Russian?

To be honest, the plot of Big Lebowski isn’t really important. Rather, we’re more concerned with how the main character handles his cocktail. And as it turns out, his White Russian recipe is rather unconventional.

Instead of heavy cream, the Dude uses half and half in his concoction. And the ratio? Pi times thumb times a lot of vodka. Oh, and he uses his index finger to stir it all up. Shaker? Strainer? Classic cocktail recipe? Completely unnecessary!

White Russian Recipe: The Origin Story

What makes the preparation of the cocktail in the movie funny is that the original version is anything but laissez faire and slacker attitude.

The predecessor of the White Russian, simply “Russian”, was first mentioned in a cocktail book in the 1930s. However, the drink had little in common with today’s recipe – the ingredients were vodka, gin and crème de cacao (in equal parts).

Then came the Black Russian, which can still be found on the IBA (International Bartenders Association) website. Exactly when whole milk or cream was added to the black version for the first time is not entirely clear. However, the White Russian was already mentioned in the Diners’ Club Drink Book in 1961.

White Russian Cocktail: On the Trail of the Original Recipe

White Russian

The term “original recipe” is tricky with the White Russian. As it happens, there are numerous opinions on what the right method of preparation looks like.

However, most sources agree on the basic components of this coffee cocktail: there are only three ingredients in a White Russian: vodka, coffee liqueur and a dairy product. Oh, and anyone caught with ice cubes in their glass has to pay a fine.

White Russian Ingredients: Vodka, Coffee Liqueur, Cream … Or?

Most classic White Russian recipes include just three ingredients:

  • Vodka

  • Coffee liqueur

  • Cream

The alcoholic part is non-negotiable: aside from a few variations, all recipes contain vodka and coffee liqueur, usually Mexican Kahlúa or Tia Maria.

The world is divided when it comes to cream. In addition to (whipped) cream, milk or half and half are also acceptable to some. For vegans, various types of plant-based milk are available. In my experience, the best non-dairy options are either soy or coconut milk, both of which give the White Russian a pleasant sweetness. Then again, almond milk adds a delightful nutty flavor.

DIY Coffee Liqueur

Feel free to make the White Russian your own by experimenting with the coffee liqueur element. In addition to Kahlúa, there are many other brands on the market.

Better still, consider making your own version. It really isn’t very difficult and you can play around until you’ve perfected your recipe. Of course, the most important thing to remember is that using high-quality coffee beans is key. To get you started, here’s my best coffee liqueur recipe:

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces (237 milliliters) cold brew concentrate. See my post on how to make cold brew.

  • 8 ounces (237 milliliters) water

  • 8 ounces (237 milliliters) raw sugar

  • 1 vanilla bean

  • 12 ounces (355 milliliters) light rum

DIY Coffee Liqueur

Method

Make simple syrup by combining the water and sugar in a pan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then remove from heat and allow to cool. Once the syrup mixture has reached room temperature, add it to a Mason jar with the vanilla bean, rum and cold brew concentrate.

Leave this mixture to steep in a cool, dark place for at least three days. Then, remove the vanilla bean and transfer the coffee liqueur to a sealable bottle.

Incidentally, you can use pretty much any kind of strong alcohol you’d like if rum isn’t your thing. For example, feel free to experiment with good quality vodka, bourbon or brandy.

My Classic White Russian Recipe

To prepare the perfect White Russian with a cream layer, proceed as follows:

  1. Cool vodka and coffee liqueur in a shaker filled with ice cubes

  2. Strain into a pre-cooled martini glass

  3. Whip the cream briefly in a blender until it thickens

  4. Using a bar spoon, carefully pour into the glass to create a “floating” effect

Serve the White Russian without a straw or any decoration. A martini glass is truly classic, but you can get away with using a tumbler. Oh, and forget about using ice, as it’ll dilute the drink.

It’s only this preparation method that creates the characteristic White Russian layers. It kind of reminds me of a barraquito, but with fewer ingredients.

Barraquito Recipe Ingredients

For the Lebowski-style method, you simply use milk instead of cream – full fat helps achieve the best taste in my opinion. Add the ingredients one by one to a glass with a little ice, stir with your finger, done.

The Mixing Ratio

As with the preparation, the mixing ratio of the ingredients for a White Russian isn’t set in stone. Here’s a typical example:

  • 2 parts vodka (1.4 ounces or 40 milliliters)

  • 1 part coffee liqueur

  • 1–2 parts cream

Vodka’s neutral flavor balances out the strong-tasting coffee liqueur. For a more caffeinated drink, you can use vodka and liqueur in equal proportions. Heck, feel free to use vanilla vodka for all I care! In the end, it all comes down to personal taste, so feel free to experiment.

White Russian Layers: Combining Ingredients Correctly

To make a respectable White Russian, you shouldn’t just dump the ingredients, one after the other, over ice cubes and stir.

To achieve clearly defined layers, you should whip the cream – but not until it becomes too firm. That way, you’ll be able to properly float the cream on top of the drink.

To do this, hold the spoon upside down over the edge of the glass and let the cream slowly run down the back of the spoon into the glass.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with simply dumping and stirring the ingredients together. But the special thing about this classic cocktail is when you’re sipping the alcohol through the rich layer of cream.

Mixing it Up: White Russian Recipe Variations

Whether it’s coffee with a shot or a coffee-flavored drink that floats your boat, there are plenty of combinations of coffee and alcohol flavors to experiment with.

Black Russian: Vegan Alternative Without Milk

The Black Russian is a more subtle alternative and even more classic than the white version. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1.7 ounces (50 milliliters) vodka

  • 1 ounce (30 milliliters) coffee liqueur

  • Rocks glass with ice

Pour everything over ice cubes, stir, done. No garnish, no chichi.

Dirty Russian With Espresso: An Extra Hit of Caffeine

The Dirty Russian is similar to the espresso martini, but a little creamier. Here are the deets:

  • 1.4 ounces (40 milliliters) vodka

  • 0.7 ounces (20 milliliters) coffee liqueur

  • 0.7 ounces (20 milliliters) espresso

  • 0.7 ounces (20 milliliters) heavy cream

  • Old fashioned glass with ice

Use your best home espresso machine to pull a ristretto shot. Then, mix the vodka, liqueur and espresso in the ice-filled tumbler. Whip the cream briefly and let it slide into the glass. You can also prepare everything in a shaker if you’re feeling fancy.

Baileys White Russian

This variation is perfect if you want a little less caffeine in your cocktail.

  • 1.4 ounces (40 milliliters) vodka

  • 0.3 ounces (10 milliliters) coffee liqueur

  • 0.7 ounces (20 milliliters) Baileys Irish Cream

  • Tumbler with ice

Add vodka and coffee liqueur to the glass with ice. Slowly pour in the Baileys over a bar spoon; this creates a beautiful marbled effect.

Cold Brew White Russian: Alcohol-Free Luxury

Even without alcohol, the White Russian really works. Check out my virgin White Russian recipe:

  • 2.7 ounces (80 milliliters) cold brew

  • 0.7 ounces (20 milliliters) syrup of your choice (a mix of chocolate, vanilla and caramel works perfectly)

  • 0.7 ounces (20 milliliters) cream, whipped

  • Ice cream, cocktail shaker and martini glass

Shake the cold brew with the syrup and ice for a few seconds. Then, strain the liquid into a chilled martini glass and add cream by letting it slowly slide on top. Serve immediately.

Final Thoughts: An After Dinner Drink With a Caffeine Kick

The luxurious White Russian is a milkshake that packs a punch, both in terms of alcohol content and caffeine. For me, it’s a great dessert drink and one of the classic coffee recipes – even if it lacks real coffee.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to preparation and the mixing ratio – only personal preferences. Heck, if you want to do it like in the movie … that’s fine too.

I’d recommend Experimenting a little with the coffee liqueur. Instead of a popular coffee liqueur like Kahlua, try an alternative from a small roastery or distillery. Better yet, make your own liqueur with good coffee! What more can I say, other than the Dude abides!
